Rizzo stood in front of Lariquett’s desk and gave his report.

‘So nothing really stands out; Valeron hasn’t learned anything.’

‘There is one curious thing, Chief. Keogh and Blade told me they saw Mrs. Adour stop Valeron on the street when she and Jacques’ spinster sister were headed for the restaurant. Next thing, the man is sitting down with the two of them for a meal.’

The news brought Lariquett to his feet, a scowl darkening his face. ‘What could Sylvia have been thinking, consorting with a known gunman?’

‘Keogh watched them for a bit, but there’s no way he could get close enough to hear anything. He did say Sylvia and Valeron seemed on the best of terms.’

Lariquett rubbed the stubble along his jawline. He hadn’t made it to the barber yet today, but, presently, that was the least of his worries.

‘Valeron teaming up with Sylvia is not a good combination,’ he said. ‘That man is beginning to annoy me.’

‘You think Mrs. Adour knows something that can hurt us?’

‘It’s hard to say,’ Lariquett admitted. ‘She is not a stupid woman. She might believe, because this guy is a Valeron, he is untouchable.’

‘Don’t make much difference, Chief. Ain’t no way she can know about Sutter.’

‘No, but there’s an outside chance she suspects why Donny had to be eliminated.’

‘One thing more,’ Rizzo continued his report. ‘Valeron sent a letter with the post going to Boulder. I seen him drop it off to be in the mail.’

‘Could have been something to his folks or girlfriend. Who knows?’

‘Leon recalled seeing the address when he stuck it in the sack – it was to the Boulder police.’

Lariquett frowned at the news. ‘The Boulder police? What can that be about?’

‘No idea, Chief. Maybe he is looking for information about Sutter.’

‘Valeron is beginning to annoy me.’

‘Perhaps it’s time that me and the boys arranged an accident for him.’

He grunted. ‘It would have to be done without anyone pointing a finger in our direction.’

‘Do you have something in mind?’

‘Valeron has made a lot of enemies over the last few years. Might even be someone around who would like to see him dead.’

‘Who are we talking about?’

‘Can’t be one of our regular people. This calls for the services of someone special. Is Valeron staying at the hotel?’

‘He is.’

Lariquett’s eyes grew stone cold. ‘Here’s what I want you to do.’
